New Year’s Eve

With Mom and Dad gone, we spend a few days at Mel’s but then decide to come back home where Evangeline invites us all to a huge New Year's Eve party that her network is throwing in downtown LA.

Everyone looks excited, except for Joel and then I remember: his mom died on New Year’s Eve and it must be a really hard time for him.

I decide that I want to be by his side on that night and talk to Xander and Logan about it.

‘Guys, I hope you don’t mind. I am sorry that we won’t get to toast the together but I would rather you two go to the party and have fun. You can be Evangeline’s super hot dates and I will just tell Joel that I don’t want to leave Ferguson by himself all night and if he wants to hang out with us at my house...’

At first, they seem to want to stick around too but then Xander realises that his mom was counting on not going by herself and convinces Logan to go along too.

New Years Eve arrives and Billy gets picked up by Alyssa: he’s spending the night at her house and I had a talk with him about using a condom if things go that far but Billy reassures me that he isn’t ready for that. Logan and Xander have told him that he doesn’t need to feel bad about not being ready for sex and shared their regrets about their first times with Billy.

‘I was feeling like a weirdo, because it seems that the whole football team spends their weekends having sex with girl or another, especially if they aren’t dating exclusively.

But if two cool guys like Xander and Logan say it’s fine to wait, then I don’t feel weird anymore. I hope Alyssa won’t be too disappointed but I want to be in love for my first time and I do like her but I am not sure that I am in love just yet...’

I hug my brother: I’m so glad that he confided in Logan and Xander. He’s only fourteen and I think that he shouldn’t be in a hurry to have sex and I hope that Alyssa understands, especially because she seemed very disappointed about her first time too.

I don’t hear from Joel all morning and, while I am itching to go to see him, I decide to give him some space and spend the first part of the day preparing my famous chicken cordon inspired casserole and washing my hair and making sure that I am pretty for my boyfriend.

I know that he will be sad but I want to make every effort to let him know that I care.

Xander texts me when they leave for the party and I get my dish and little Ferguson and head over to the neighbours’ house.

Xander has given me a key, so I can let myself in the house at any time: I use it and as I set
